Reflection on the Catholics on Call June 2009 Conference

I had the privilege of attending the Catholics on Call Conference in June 2009. I found the weekend to be a very beneficial opportunity, one I have already suggested to many friends. As a seeker of knowledge and truth regarding my Catholic faith, I was happy to learn more about prayer, the discernment process, and a variety of vocations within the Church. I feel as though many of the contacts I made, both personal and professional, will be valuable in the future.

Karl Rahner on the Sacred Heart of Jesus

The German Jesuit theologian Karl Rahner (1904-1984) was known for his rather dense, academic theological writings. But he also authored a number of meditative spiritual writings that are very inspiring and thought-provoking for our life with God. Today, on the Solemnity of the Sacred Heart of Jesus, I share with you a selection from one of his writings on the Sacred Heart. Rahner had a deep devotion to the mystery of the pierced heart of Christ and he thought that this was a church devotion that would endure through the ages.

Silence - A Lenten Reflection

One of my favorite saints of all time is St. Francis of Assisi. His riches-to-rags story is moving and utterly shocking. He braved ridicule from family and friends to give up an extravagant lifestyle for a simple life dedicated to the service of God and the church. Talbot’s The Lessons of St. Francis: How to Bring Simplicity and Spirituality into Your Daily Life is a remarkable book on the virtues of St. Francis.

The Florida Retreat: A Vocational Booster Shot

Have you ever saved a seat for someone—in a dining hall, at a concert, or in any crowded situation? How frustrated are you when you wave your hands like an absolute fool, staring at the person whose attention you desire, and watch them see right through you and continue on, lost in confusion? You think that if you just stare them down long enough, they’ll finally see that you are right in front of them.

Reflections of a newly-minted Youth Minister

People never really think of Youth Ministry and Confirmation as a vocation. I had never thought of it as my true vocation until I came home from CoC Conference in August of 2008.

Humanity, as flawed as it may be, is beautiful

I ran home for some family stuff this weekend, and had the opportunity to go back to Our Lady of Lourdes, my home parish, for the first time since joining TFA back in June. Upon walking in with my mother, we were pointed out, "We need you!" Turns out they were desperate for Eucharistic Ministers. Besides the fact that our church changed all the rules since the last time I was there, I was told to fake like I knew what I was doing and got to participate in the mass.
