Today’s reading from Luke is the classic parable about two men in polar economic situations—a rich, self-indulgent king with no regard for the plight of others, and a poor man desperate for some daily bread. The king’s situation is all about being fooled by finery and having blatant disregard for the cardinal virtue of justice-- proper moderation between self-interest and the rights and needs of others. The pauper’s predicament is about recognizing, and being grateful for, the “God who gives life to all things,” of which the Second Reading from Timothy speaks.
